Your Face
Chapter 14

Dr. Green signed the rest of the papers, exhaled a hefty breath and looked down at Nick, who was sitting upright in his hospital bed. "You're free to go. Keep it safe for a few days, son. Don't do anything too active now that you're a free man." Nick smiled lazily at Green's joke and sniffed. He was still thinking about his last vision of his wedding. Could it be that they were glimpses into his future?

"Nick? The family's at home waiting for you. Let's get a move on it. Once again, Doctor Green, thank you for everything you've done for our son. A lot of people thank you."

He smiled. "Yes, I know. I have two bagloads of thankful fan mail at home. You take care Nick. Dr. Lynn? What's going on?" he asked as she rushed into the room after the nurse who had been checking up on Georgia.

"She's slipping away!" Dr. Lynn shouted as they all frantically tried to revive Georgia's heartbeat. It was all happening so quickly that it didn't seem real. All Nick knew was that his mother was trying to lead him out of the room as doctors and nurses frantically pumped Georgia's body.

"No! No!" he screamed as he broke free from his mother's embrace to go to her side. "It can't be! I don't believe this is happening."

Nick looked at her son, shocked. "Nick! Come on, Son. We can't be in their way."

"But she can't…"

"No." It was barely audible, but contrasted to the defening silence in Nick's head. Dr. Lynn stared down, her breathing yielding. "She's flatlined. Pump it up 50 more. Ready? Clear!" Georgia's body leaped and descended quickly, lifelessly. "Clear!" She jumped again, then there was the white door obstructing his view from her.

"Son. You didn't even know her."

"Yes I did! I went places! I saw places. I saw things. This isn't supposed to be happening. Not supposed to happen…"

"I just can't understand it, Bob. I've never seen him act that way before. He was screaming the oddest things in the car."

Nick silently walked up the rest of the stairs to his room. Nothing was making sense to him. He closed the door behind him and crawled into bed, hugging his knees to his chest in the fetal position. She was dead. And now he could do nothing. But remember. As the tears slowly drifted down his cheeks he was lulled into a deep sleep.

She was gone. And all he had were his memories. Memories he wasn't even sure of.
